Isa 26:3 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
When we talk about not following after Jesus with your feelings, we are of course talking about your emotions. Most times when we make decisions they are based on our personal wants or needs and relate directly to our comfort or happiness. Therefore, when we follow our feelings, we can be led astray, because we don't always know what is best for us, just what we want to be best for us. And yet we hear preachers tell us to "feel our way through" a situation. What is that all about? If we can't lean on our feelings, how can we feel our way through anything?
In the first place, feeling your way through something is nothing like following your feelings. You are probing and prying open with something designed into your core and not with emotions, which are generally much closer to the surface. Your feeling in this case is the still small voice (conscience), which is/should be led by God. {Psalms 37:2 - Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth.}
You know when you have a peace or an axiety about a particular decision or course of action. But it takes training to be able to truly say "not my will, but thine be done". Sometimes God puts us in an uncomfortable position or on an uncomfortable path for a reason. Often to cause us to see whether we can truly be happy or at peace in a direction that was not ours to begin with. If we don't mean what we say, we cannot be happy or at peace, because what we are going through doesn't conform to our whim or expectation.
Therefore, we need something beyond our expectation. We need something in our core, our heart, our center where the God-shaped hole is. When that hole is filled by his will, there is PEACE. A cessation of violence, a stop to fighting. We are no longer straining against Him, but rather lining up with exactly what he wants, and there is PEACE. The battle of wills is over. When we don't line up there is anxiety, concern, no peace. We are fighting for dominance, or refusing to go in the right direction, so God pulls on us. 1Cor. 14:33 = God is not the author of confusion. So, if there is confusion or anxiety, where does it come from?
We always need to be "in the know", to know exactly where when and why. Sometimes we need to just walk "IN THE NO", and take God at His word! He always has our BEST interests at heart for our salvation and growth. Trust Him. Have and follow peace with all men. Let God direct thy paths. Don't let emotions sway you and you will soon be able to tell the difference between following your feelings or feeling through!
